Sunflower Fund

10 March 2022

Witnessing thousands of refugees sleeping on the floors of our local train station, my 10 year old daughter looked horrified.

“Mum, we need to do something too.”

And so, we started taking action.

We live in Wroclaw, a city in the west of Poland. Many of our school teachers and friends are Ukrainian.

As the Russian invasion continues, 1.6 million people have fled to neighbouring Poland (as at 13 March). The vast majority of these refugees do not have friends or family they can rely on, nor will they be given shelter by “kind Polish strangers” as widely reported in the media.

The reality is that these women and children lie on the freezing grounds of stations and on the streets.

Not only do they have nowhere to go, they have no cash due to the plummeting ruble and sanctions against Russian banks.

But, these people have fled. To escape the fear of bombs being dropped on their streets. With the strong will to live.

And we must not forget that those with means are the first to flee. In other words, Poland will continue to be filled with many more refugees.

What can we, on the ground, do?

We asked ourselves, as we watched children beaten by the cold being taken to hospital.

When will supplies from the big organisations reach these people?

Will they ever arrive; should they keep waiting?

The answer was clear. We see with our own eyes, hear their voices directly and deliver what they need most.

We started taking action with the hope of helping as many people as we can.

What can you do?

Our activities are led by a few individuals and we are not affiliated or backed by any NPO or other organisations.

By spreading the word to friends and family, we hope to be able to communicate the reality of the situation on the ground, and collect donations through social media and this website.

Even a small amount can make a huge difference.
